Home Up

Been spending time making former A which proved to be quite complex and time consuming.

Initial frame being glued and clamped. I had cut the notches to fit the fuselage frame sides accurately first.

Curved laminates glued and clamped to the jig. I steamed the two pieces first.

Frame glued ready for facing with ply

Ply sheet cut and glued ready tp apply to the frame

Ply front face now stapled to frame after gluing

Former A out of jig and turned over front face down to insert balsa block in-fill. The local model shop could only supply 3/4 inch which is about 19mm so 3mm is going to be planed off.

Shortly after the above shot was taken I took advice from Brian and Roger and used Aerodux to glue in the balsa blocks - it took over 200mls of glue to do this followed by the surfacing ply which took another 160mls - both much larger quantities of glue than mixed before. Since the temperature has dropped I have been using an electric blanket to keep glued pieces warm through the cold nights.

The firewall bulkhead is now complete and the four blocks that sit on the back if it to take the engine mount bolts have been rough cut but not glued in place. I have taken Brian's advice and will finish cutting them after the fuselage sides have been glued to the bulkheads.
