A simple but very effective scarfing tool: (Scroll down for more, click on the images to view them full screen)

Below is the scarfing sander in place on a worked piece of ply:

The plywood is protected up to the edge of the cut with tracing paper. The sanding drum protrudes below the wooden base of the sander at an angle of approximately 3.5 degrees, giving a scarf of 30mm on 2mm ply, The timber guide hooked over the table edge allows very accurate control of the sander.
